Singer Vinger - Nothing special

Posted in Other Stuff, Export Marketing, English Posts by Robin Gurney on the July 31st, 2006

Singer Vinger was the band I saw last night in the grounds of Rakverre Castle and pretty good they are too !

Hard to pin them down to a category.

Not quite punk, not art rock. Let’s just call it predictably individual rock ‘n’ roll.

Anyway I liked them.

They reminded me at times of The Clash and, Hardi Volmer’s (the lead singer and talented film director, animator etc.) little dances were definitely amusingly Morrissey’esque.

They teamed up with other Estonian rock band Ultima Thule, who are not bad, but perhaps a bit mainstream for my tastes.

So why the title of the post: Nothing special? “ei midagi erilist” in Estonian

Well, that was the name of rap song they wrote in 1983 or perhaps even 1982.

If that’s true and it was recorded pre-87 then it could be the first recorded rap track in the world, which would no doubt annoy Chuck D of Public Enemy who I think previously held the claim to fame of being the world’s first rapper.

Check out Singer Vinger and other Estonian music .

STOP PRESS: (self comment) What a load of Rubbish !

Blondie released Rapture in 1980… of course, I still have a copy :) and before that we had Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight in 1979….

What was I thinking ? doh :)

Sorry folks, I must have been in the sun too long :)

I better stick to talking about internet marketing stuff for a bit….

Netiturundus - New SEO company in Tallinn

Posted in Internet Marketing, English Posts by Robin Gurney on the July 26th, 2006

I have said before that we welcome competition so it’s great to see another company offering SEO services.

The new kids on the block are Netiturundus and I just had lunch with Fred and Mart (seem like nice people) whilst they told me some of their plans.

It seems as though there are going to focus on building small search engine friendly websites as well as offering search engine optimisation services per se.

We wish them well and to anyone else planning to enter the internet marketing space here in Estonia we say:

“Come in, the water is lovely”.

Business is growing and more and more Estonian companies are looking to gain competitive advantages online.

If you know anyone else in Estonia offering internet marketing services then let us know :)

NOTE: We have not used Netiturundus services and so we cannot endorse them, however I feel confident that they will be an ethical white hat SEO company, so we are happy to promote them.

G2 direct and digital

Posted in Internet Marketing, English Posts by Robin Gurney on the July 26th, 2006

I have selected a few quotes from this story (at the excellent B2Bonline) I just read about Grey Direct deciding to rebrand as G2 direct and digital.

The BIG PICTURE is getting clearer I hope…

“Ogilvy did that a long time ago with Ogilvy Direct becoming OgilvyOne, combining direct and interactive,” Andrew Frank, research director at Gartner.

“There’s still a debate going on whether Internet and online media is an evolutionary change, or a revolutionary change that will disrupt a lot of the traditional agency business,” Frank said. “A name change doesn’t necessarily begin to address that question.

“The real story behind the story is the convergence of sales and advertising on the internet,” he said.

He added the Internet is a medium that is transactional and has branding power.

Those two worlds within agencies need to come together, he said.

“The agencies need to figure out a way of organizing themselves that does not create silos around the type of medium,” Frank said. They need to figure out new ways to divide up the market. Media is no longer a good way to create divisional structures.”

Thankyou Frank and of course it’s disruptive.

The internet is disrupting and disintermediating just about everything we can think of from the real world.

Bring it on :)

In the article: Joe Celia, chairman-CEO of G2 Worldwide, said the companies under the G2 brand are all dedicated to what he calls “activation marketing.”

“Every communication solution that we deliver is designed to create some level of action or interaction with the consumer,” Celia said, in a statement.

My comment: hey Joe, start with your own website. It sucks as a transactional medium (it might be great for branding - no comment - not my area of expertise) and you could do with some link building and seo too by the way.

Get real. No doubt Grey (G2) are great at some stuff but pretending they “get it” with a slick rebrand will not cut it with people who understand how the internet works. But hei-ho it’s a move in the right direction I guess :)

Consumer Generated Media (CGM)

Posted in Internet Marketing, English Posts by Robin Gurney on the July 17th, 2006

CGM or UGM (user generated media) is marketing’s new black.

The key attraction is marketers’ ability to monitor, track and therefore respond “appropriately” to consumer conversations about, and opinions of, their brands.

Throw in blogging as a key influence of opinion and the viral effect of that and hey presto ! you have a powerful medium.

A company’s ability to make decisions can only be enhanced by listening to the moans, groans and praise for their and their competitors’ products and services.

In Estonia we are yet to see CGM really take off but if we look across the pond at the good old US of A we get a glimpse of the future…

Brands ask consumers to help them generate ads -cool, but for how long will they do it (essentially) unrewarded?

And be careful CGM can explode on your face.
Look at GM campaign for the SUV Chevvy Tahoe:

GM asked internet users to make video ads within strict guidelines, but some people took the “ok’d” images and turned them against their owners.

22,000+ ads were created - wow but a huge 16% were negative.

“We anticipated that there would be critical submissions. You do turn over your brand to the public, and we knew that we were going to get some bad with the good. But it’s part of playing in this space.” Chevrolet spokeswoman Melisa Tezanos told the New York Times.

Now this bad CGM is not necessarily outwieghing the positive effect of the good stuff but a company needs to know how to cope with it before going down the CGM dream road.

Just look at what happened to DELL after mishandling Jeff Jarvis . DELL HELL (PDF)!

Oh dear !

DELL were burying their head in the sand about a complaining customer’s valid issues.

No DELL NO ! Listen, engage, react and treat customers like humans…

Max Kalehoff, vice president of marketing for Nielsen BuzzMetrics says :

“Practice common sense ethics. Be a champion of the consumer. You can no longer market a product that sucks. Consumers talk to one another. Search engines are becoming not just ways to find data on the web but powerful enablers or facilitators for passionate information seekers. As a result, it comes down to less tolerance by the consumer. Consumer respect is an emerging theme here. Advertisers need to understand WOM (word of mouth) and the interaction and process and flow surrounding it.”

It seems pretty obvious that person-to-person conversation facilitated and monitored by genuinely caring brands will be the CGM of the future.

CGM WILL be integrated into normal / traditional marketing research and furthermore it will stretch into all areas of marketing, product/service creation, advertising and even sales too.

As I have said many a time: Find out what your customers want and…give it to them. Simple. (Not quite so simple but still the right thing to do)

I leave you today with wise words from Mark Tutssel, worldwide chief creative officer at Leo Burnett ad agency:

“Marketers must learn to let go of the control they think they have over their brand…. Once consumers have interacted with brands they will not go back to being shouted at by marketers.”

Consumer Generated Media is hugely powerful but not something to jump into lightly. Think before you leap, prepare carefully, keep the customers needs and desires uppermost in your mind at all times.

Good luck, get it right, like Converse, AUDI and Cadillac did and you will be very pleased with the results and never look back….

Marketing will never be the same again :)

E-consultancy.com recently interviewed Rok Hrastnik

Posted in Internet Marketing, English Posts by Robin Gurney on the July 13th, 2006

E-consultancy.com interview with Rok Hrastnik about the joys of RSS

I am a “fan” of both e-consultancy.com and Rok who spoke at one Eturundus! event here in Tallinn (and not because we share a similar taste in facial hair)

The interview answered these RSS-related questions:

1. You are a huge enthusiast of RSS. What are the basics?
2. Can you sum up the opportunities for businesses?
3. How big is RSS at the moment? Can you help separate hype from reality by giving us an overview of RSS usage / adoption (by consumers / businesses)?
4. Are there any early success stories to share?
5. Many online publishers will be used to sending out newsletters or alerts by email, but how can RSS be used in conjunction with email?
6. How do you track RSS usage? What sort of metrics are there? Any suggested tools to help people do this?
7. Can RSS be used as an advertising medium? Should it be used in this way?
8. Which companies do you think are leading the way in the deployment of RSS?
