I cannot state for certain that the cyber attacks were managed by the Kremlin
“Of course, at the moment, I cannot state for certain that the cyber attacks were managed by the Kremlin, or other Russian government agencies,” said Estonia’s Defense Minister, Jaak Aaviksoo, on the Estonian Kanal 2 TV channel.

Russia Electrocutes Estonian Interweb Thingy
Here’s an extract from a wonderful little Newsbiscuit post spotted by Pets: Russia and Estonia ‘pretending to have computers
‘The Russians are electrocuting our interweb mailsites.
Their floppy disks are blocking our e-posts and we are catching viruses from their DVD clinic,’ said the Estonian minister for technology, speaking from his horse.
The Russian Foreign Minister was quick to deny the allegations;
‘Yes we have lots of computers in Moscow.
We turn them on and compute on them.
We have not sent happy slapping texts to Estonia, or released the cybermen.
But we do have lots and lots of computers.
Excuse me, I have a web call coming through on my tractor phone.’

Russia EU Summit: Putin, you are full of sh*t
It’s not like me to swear. Really.
And especially not on our company blog.
No doubt I have upset someone, sorry… no actually I am not, not really.
I am just exercising my right to free speech in a democratic society.
Putin you ARE full of sh*t and you seem hellbent on disturbing the peace.
Let it go, man.
Estonia is free of your grasp and part of EU and NATO now.
Estonia may even make mistakes (yes, I know everything is perfect in Russia but Estonia is learning, Mr Putin) but it has that right.
It is a sovereign state with a right to determine its own future and make its own decisions, whether you, I or anyone else agrees or disagrees with them.
I know you hate it but…tough, that’s life. I hate US TV soaps but I live with their existence.
Why am I ranting? Because at the the EU-Russia Summit Putin said this:
“They (Estonian police) didn’t just disperse demonstrators. They killed one demonstrator. We demand that the criminals be brought to account”
Vladimir Putin, Russian President
Source: BBC and Forbes
Well either Putin is full of crap or his advisors are - as this is patently untrue.
The person was not killed by Estonian police and even if he was (let’s give Mr Putin the benefit of the doubt) there is voluminous evidence to the contrary suggesting he was stabbed by another looter (yes, it’s alleged the murdered person was a looter too) and anyway even if your desperate attention-seeking claim were true then please, Mr Putin, you could still show some respect for the family of the person involved.
The murdered man, his name was Dmitri Ganin aged 20, had Estonian and Russian-speaking friends and at his funeral his mother made a plea to the Russian Consul, members of Nochnoi Dozor, Russian TV-stations, and those present at the funeral not to use her son’s death for propaganda purposes.
Guess you missed that, Mr Putin, eh?
Or was it because his mother did not mention your actual name in the list?

Probably Putin’s EU summit outrage at the poor treatment of Russian speakers in Estonia has nothing to do with “his” alleged cyber-war-tactics being thoroughly and forensically investigated:
“The continuing cyber-attacks against Estonia bear evidence of Russian involvement.
Computer experts have traced some of the attacks to Russian government and presidential computers,” said Andres Kasekamp, director of the Estonian Foreign Policy Institute
Estonian Defence Ministry spokesman Madis Mikko said to AFP “a large amount of the attacks came from computers in Russia, including within the Russian administration.”
“That can be bad in two ways..whether attacks originated within the Russian state system, or Russian state computers are infected with a virus, which sends out attacks on Estonian servers — it’s bad in either case,” he said.
so the Eu-Russia summit ends badly… no surprise there then but at least key statement of support emerged for Estonia:
“The Polish problem is a European problem. The Lithuanian and Estonia problems are also EU problems. It is very important if you want to have close co-operation to understand that the EU is based on principles of solidarity.”
Jose Manuel Barroso, European Commission chief
I want to point out to my readers (for those who don’t know me and again if necessary) I have absolutely nothing against Russia or Russians or Russian speakers in Estonia or anywhere else.
What is starting to really piss me off is the Russian Government singling out Estonia for especially nasty attention.
Enough said.
White flowers pls if “they” come and get me
NATO Examines (Russian) Cyber Attacks on Estonia
Extracts of front page news in the UK, Guardian newspaper today.
Without naming Russia, the Nato official said: “I won’t point fingers. But these were not things done by a few individuals.
“This clearly bore the hallmarks of something concerted. The Estonians are not alone with this problem. It really is a serious issue for the alliance as a whole.”
“This is an operational security issue, something we’re taking very seriously,” said an official at Nato headquarters in Brussels. “It goes to the heart of the alliance’s modus operandi.”
Alarm over the unprecedented scale of cyber-warfare is to be raised tomorrow at a summit between Russian and European leaders outside Samara on the Volga.
While planning to raise the issue with the Russian authorities, EU and Nato officials have been careful not to accuse the Russians directly.
If it were established that Russia is behind the attacks, it would be the first known case of one state targeting another by cyber-warfare.
Relations between the Kremlin and the west are at their worst for years, with Russia engaged in bitter disputes not only with Estonia, but with Poland, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, and Georgia - all former parts of the Soviet Union or ex-members of the Warsaw Pact. The electronic offensive is making matters much worse.
“Frankly it is clear that what happened in Estonia in the cyber-attacks is not acceptable and a very serious disturbance,” said a senior EU official.
Estonia’s president, foreign minister, and defence minister have all raised the emergency with their counterparts in Europe and with Nato.
“At present, Nato does not define cyber-attacks as a clear military action. This means that the provisions of Article V of the North Atlantic Treaty, or, in other words collective self-defence, will not automatically be extended to the attacked country,” said the Estonian defence minister, Jaak Aaviksoo.
“Not a single Nato defence minister would define a cyber-attack as a clear military action at present. However, this matter needs to be resolved in the near future.”

Russia accused of unleashing cyberwar to disable Estonia
Estonia and Russia: cyber war goes on
Nice to see The Economist beginning to acknowledge the serious implications of the cyber attacks on Estonia.
As we commented at Global Neighbourhoods this is serious, really.
“As Angela Merkel reflects on a Russian cybertank on EU territory she might contemplate which assets are under attack - perm one or all four: sovereignty, territory, resource, or ideology….”
Anyway have a good weekend and read on…
….The alarm is sounding well beyond Estonia. NATO has been paying special attention. “If a member state’s communications centre is attacked with a missile, you call it an act of war. So what do you call it if the same installation is disabled with a cyber-attack?” asks a senior official in Brussels. Estonia’s defence ministry goes further: a spokesman compares the attacks to those launched against America on September 11th 2001. Two of NATO’s top specialists in internet warfare, plus an American colleague, have hurried to Tallinn to observe the onslaught. But international law is of little help, complains Rein Lang, Estonia’s justice minister……

Attack against Estonian Chancery in Pskov, Russia
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Concerned of Attack against Estonian Chancery in Pskov
The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern over the attack against the Pskov Chancery of Consulate General in St. Petersburg in the morning of 10 May. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the government of the Russian Federation to take all measures to guarantee the safety of the Pskov Chancery.
Attacks against Estonian missions in the Russian Federation are unacceptable, Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said.
„Russian authorities need to guarantee the safety of all three Estonian representations in Russia,” Paet emphasised. “The Russian Federation has to abide by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” he added.
People of Estonia. Time to show your colours.
And I don’t mean Red or Black or Blue (or combinations thereof).
I just mean White.
I am not Estonian but my wife, son, closest family, many business colleagues and friends are.
Some are “Estonian” some are “Russian” - frankly I don’t care if they are martians or from timbuktuu.
So I want to show my colours and support this initiative called White Tulips.
“….The White Tulips -movement started to spread their peaceful message of not hating anyone and that even the Estonians and Estonian Russians may have different pasts, they have common future….”
Estonia is a wonderful country with a great future ahead of it. Sort it out people, don’t let the angry people win the day.
It’s our planet -share it wisely.
Peace man ! and check the flowers ![]()
