OKIA and Apprise join AngloEstonian

Posted in Internet Marketing, Inward Investment, Export Marketing, English Posts, Estonian Culture in UK by Robin Gurney on the January 22nd, 2008

OKIA (Ok Interactive) and Apprise are the latest companies to be approved to join AngloEstonian.

Obviously AngloEstonian is catching the imagination in Estonia and the strength of the team is growing.
Over the next few months we will decide what’s best going forward.
One area we are looking at is converting AngloEstonian into a more formal association of Estonian New media Exporters (at the moment its owned and run by altex)

AngloEstonian Launch Party Report

Thanks to Dr Margus Laidre, The Estonian Ambassador to the UK, and his team the AngloEstonian launch was a friendly, buzzy and apparently pretty successful little event.
Another special thank you must go to the speakers Malthe Sigurdsson (Skype), Sam Michel (Chinwag) and Jason Boorman (Blue Barracuda) who set the tone perfectly.

I know personally that (already) a number of high value, concrete and serious and deals are now possible, even probable, directly as a result of the meeting.
I am aware of one deal being closed already too.
And that’s down to the quality, not the quantity, the agency representatives who came.

These deals include short and long term outsourcing, setting up production arms and, as humbly predicted in my speech, acquisition interest - Estonian New Media sector has increased its footprint, in London anyway :)

Videos of the opening speeches by Dr Margus Laidre, Malthe, Sam, Jason and myself will go up to YouTube, photos to Flickr
- we announce when they are ready here.

Äripäev were there and got some interviews so watch out for the story…

Estonian Embassy in Second Life

Posted in Other Stuff, Internet Marketing, Export Marketing, English Posts, Integrated Marketing by Robin Gurney on the October 8th, 2007

I don’t want to go public on my comments about the Estonian Embassy in Second Life yet although I do find the decision rather “curious”.
I will reserve deeper comment for when it launches and we can all have a good look around.

However it’s good to know that Hill and Knowlton can produce such good value work.

Quoted as costing at 6400€ to create the Embassy I wonder if they would care to build a similarly complex Second Life office for altex, designed by Scope Clever, for the same price?

Anyone from H & K reading? Did you really do this for that price?
If so the send me a quote please or perhaps clarify the true cost if the cost of 6400€ is inaccurate.

We could not compete with that price and if the cost is correctly quoted then I am sure we can send some customers your way.

Here is the blog following the Embassy’s progress.

TALLINN, Estonia, June 4, 2007 – mail2market.net a leading Estonia marketing software and solutions company specialising in email marketing, online surveys and mobile marketing has appointed an exclusive Sales Agent with immediate effect. Operating from its offices in London, UK and Tallinn, Estonia altex marketing oü will sell the full range of mail2market.net services to the UK and Estonian markets.

Commenting on the appointment Peeter Pärna, director of mail2market.net, said “The appointment of our first General Sales Agency is a significant step in the further development of our business model and represents a clear opportunity to extend our existing global coverage to a growing market. I see significant opportunities for us with the experience and reputation that altex marketing has in the Estonia and UK markets and we expect to grow in these markets with more than 100% in the next 12 months. Having a strong sales and marketing partner means we can focus even more attention on product development which is what we are best at.”

The cooperation between mail2market.net & altex marketing extends to the appointment of dedicated sales and marketing resources that will allow many more Estonian and UK companies easy access to high quality, thoroughly tested e-marketing solutions. The email marketing solutions are expected to grab a significant share of market quickly, especially in Estonia.

China, Trade & Usability

Posted in Internet Marketing, Export Marketing, English Posts by Robin Gurney on the September 26th, 2006

Response Time as Trade Barrier

One of the main reasons Baidu is winning search share in China over
Google, Yahoo, and MSN is that users complain that the foreign search engines are too slow.

Of course, it’s well-known that download times is a key factor in usability and that users prefer fast sites.

What’s less well-known is that the reason for the slow performance of the GYM sites is that the Chinese government has artificially reduced the speed of accessing sites outside China.

China should be reported to the WTO for restraint of trade for delaying foreign websites’ download times.

I strongly doubt that the State Department has anybody at the policy level who understands usability, so most likely nothing will happen.

With the growth of the digital economy, usability becomes an increasingly important element in determining which products and services customers choose to patronize.

This again means that trade negotiators to understand ways in which facilitate or undermine good user experience.

Singer Vinger - Nothing special

Posted in Other Stuff, Export Marketing, English Posts by Robin Gurney on the July 31st, 2006

Singer Vinger was the band I saw last night in the grounds of Rakverre Castle and pretty good they are too !

Hard to pin them down to a category.

Not quite punk, not art rock. Let’s just call it predictably individual rock ‘n’ roll.

Anyway I liked them.

They reminded me at times of The Clash and, Hardi Volmer’s (the lead singer and talented film director, animator etc.) little dances were definitely amusingly Morrissey’esque.

They teamed up with other Estonian rock band Ultima Thule, who are not bad, but perhaps a bit mainstream for my tastes.

So why the title of the post: Nothing special? “ei midagi erilist” in Estonian

Well, that was the name of rap song they wrote in 1983 or perhaps even 1982.

If that’s true and it was recorded pre-87 then it could be the first recorded rap track in the world, which would no doubt annoy Chuck D of Public Enemy who I think previously held the claim to fame of being the world’s first rapper.

Check out Singer Vinger and other Estonian music .

STOP PRESS: (self comment) What a load of Rubbish !

Blondie released Rapture in 1980… of course, I still have a copy :) and before that we had Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight in 1979….

What was I thinking ? doh :)

Sorry folks, I must have been in the sun too long :)

I better stick to talking about internet marketing stuff for a bit….

Bravo Jaan Tatte

Posted in Other Stuff, Internet Marketing, Export Marketing, English Posts by Robin Gurney on the July 6th, 2006

Jaan Tatte’s play “The Highway Crossing” , Ristumine Peateega in Estonian, about an indecent proposal ;) is showing in London.

Bravo Jaan!

Is this a first for an Estonian playwright?

“Surprised by rain and sudden darkness Laura and Roland, a young couple hitch-hiking on an empty road, decide to seek shelter at a nearby country house. Osvald, the owner, seems to know the deeper meaning of their unexpected visit. His strange behaviour leads to an equally strange offer: Osvald wants to buy Roland’s wife. Laura and Roland start to play along, only to discover that their host is not kidding.” is the anon description I found at IMDB about the film (1999) of the same name.
