Meelis Ojasild

I’ve been working for altex since the beginning of 2007. My job title is internet marketer, so I do a little bit of everything. Email marketing has been one of my specialties though – most of the email campaigns are run through me (including Spindo Club). I recently visited Ad-Tech London 2007. I’ve spoken at Eturundus!11 and BarCamp Baltics 2008. I also get involved in our search marketing activities.

Okay, as I’m very young still (born 1983) I can’t compete with Robin’s bio, but I’ll try to give you an idea what I’m interested in and what I’ve been doing so far.

I was involved with computers since the primary school already. I was literally dragged to a computer class while running on a track. And they (the big bad high school guys) forced me to play a game called MUD because they needed more players. It’s probably the weirdest and most exciting computer game ever (it’s only text based). But I recommend you to not try it out (it almost got me kicked out of school for sitting in the computer class all the time).

After high school I thought it might be reasonable to study informatics in a university. Bad decision! I tried 3 times and never managed to last more than 6 months at a time. Universities just weren’t my thing (but I never joined a fraternity so I always got free beer at their invite evenings – be sure to try it out while in Tartu during the “season”).

As I was originally from Rakvere and studied in Tartu, I decided to try out Tallinn as well. I actually managed to get here only because I was invited to DJ so I could afford a small flat in the old town.

I then tried out various jobs (from Dilbert-like environment programming stuff to phone sales). In the end of 2006 I decided to create my own company but Robin also invited me to join altex so I kind of ran my own project on the side.

As people like to watch pictures I have to put one up as well. Surprisingly, it’s a picture of myself:

Okay, so, now you know how I got involved in internet marketing. My biggest passions are music, film and travels (not in order of priority). I’ve been producing music since 2001, kind of underground dance stuff like techno, house, 2step, electro et cetera. Yes, it’s fun to consider yourself as an underground producer – gives you a cool silvery shine :) I won’t give out my current alias though but I’m sure that if you’re into the same music you’ll run into me sooner or later (Estonia is so small!).

I’m currently very much into Ariel Pink. He’s from LA and produces his tracks with Yamaha 8-track. He plays all the instruments by himself (does drums with his mouth). His sound is really crappy (lo-fi) but also mystical (it called hauntology). It will give your imagination plenty of work. It’s like leaving a window open while listening to music so all the traffic noises come in and play along. Sweet.

My travels involve mostly Northern-Europe. I’m a big fan of Couchsurfing. Basically it’s about accommodating people for free on your couch. I first heard about it in 2004 (I think) and I’ve used it on numerous occasions (both as a host and as a plant). It’s just awesome!

I’ve also directed some music & ad videos and a short film. Some of my all time favourite movies include: Bad Taste, Apocalypse Now and most of David Lynch’ films.

PS: Order The Prisoner and you’ll find out who is “number 1″.
